I took the family on vacation to the Dominican Republic this year; a working vacation that is. Lessons learned:

1 – Trust your home-based team to be able to cover for you.
2 – Plan for travel delays.
3 – Don’t assume your cell phone will work outside the US.
4 – It is OK to walk away from BlackBerry for half a day.
5 – Never travel without a flash drive.
6 – Convert cash to travel country currency before you leave US.
7 – Many 3rd world countries DO NOT have free hot spots.
8 – Arrange to have grass cut.
9 – Never stop asking wife to travel light.
10 – Gauge yourself – before and after vacation and learn to stay refreshed long after your return.
