It’s no secret that IE6 (Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6) is a security and web development nightmare.
Microsoft has dropped support for the browser as have many notable websites, including Google and YouTube.
So it’s very promising news that statcounter.com is reporting that IE6 usage in the USA and Europe has fallen below 5% for the first time ever.

What is older than the TV series 24, the X-Box (the original one), Windows XP, the original iPod, and East Timor (that’s a country, not a tasty dish). Give up? Internet Explorer 6. IE6 is going on 9 years old, and Internet Explorer 8 has been released. IE6 has a myriad of known security and compatiblity bugs. It does not render modern CSS correctly, which means you are not viewing most websites in the full glory they were intended. It has a ton of security issues that were left unhandled by Microsoft. This means if you are using IE6 you are more vulnerable to identity theft, credit card fraud, malware, spyware, viruses, adware and the all too annoying popup window.
Over at http://iedeathmarch.org/ dozens of web designers, developers, technicians, network admins, and other technology personnel have sworn to stop supporting IE6 in March 2009 (already come and gone). This means most of the technology people you rely on to keep the web running have publicly said they have stopped supporting IE6.
What should you do if you are still using IE6? Switch. Immediately. Head over to http://browsehappy.com/ to learn more about the modern web browsers that are out there. Not only will you be helping the Internet and making yourself safer online, you will probably find your online surfing experience considerably more enjoyable with a modern web browser.
